In 1968, Chevrolet introduced an entirely new generation of the Corvette C3, inspired by the Mako Shark II concept. Sharp lines, a long hood, a dramatically sloped rear end, and an unmistakable silhouette made this one of the most iconic designs of the 1960s. Today, the first model year of the C3 is among the most sought-after collector pieces, as it represents the pure, original interpretation of the Shark Era.
5.7 V8 engine – the raw power of the American small-block
Under the front hood beats the legendary Chevrolet small-block 5.7L V8. This engine is renowned for its reliability, simple construction, and wide availability of performance upgrades. In its period tuning, it delivered energetic power delivery, strong torque across the rev range, and a characteristic deep sound no collector of American classics could mistake.
The Corvette C3 was highly advanced for its time. It uses independent suspension on all four wheels, a rarity among American sports cars of the 1960s. The front axle features double wishbones, while the rear uses a unique transverse composite leaf spring, helping the car maintain low weight and excellent driving dynamics. Four-wheel disc brakes ensure confident stopping, and power steering improves usability in everyday driving. The whole setup is tuned to provide a balance between comfort and sporty sharpness — exactly what Corvette drivers valued most.
The cabin of the first C3 blends a cockpit-like layout with the elegance of the sixties. Twin gauge pods in front of the driver, the typical vertical arrangement of auxiliary gauges, and the low seating position create the atmosphere of a true racing machine.
Collector value and investment potential
The 1968 model year is highly sought after among collectors — it represents the first year of the legendary C3 generation and one of the cleanest designs of the entire lineup. Corvettes from this era have maintained strong market value over time, and thanks to the abundant supply of spare parts and a strong community, they remain an exceptionally practical classic. The car is therefore ideal not only as an investment, but above all as a source of authentic driving experiences that modern sports cars simply cannot offer.
