Car introduction
The new Subaru Outback Wilderness 2026 represents the off-road-oriented version of this popular model. It is also powered by the most powerful SUBARU BOXER turbocharged engine, with a displacement of 2.4L, delivering 260 HP and 376 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted via Subaru’s permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system – a core brand hallmark that ensures confidence and traction on slippery or uneven surfaces. The transmission is a continuously variable CVT (Lineartronic®) with the option of manual control via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Compared to other variants, the Wilderness version offers 20 mm higher ground clearance, reaching 24 cm (9.5 inches), which significantly improves off-road capability as well as maneuverability in snow or mud. In terms of towing capacity, the Outback Wilderness can tow up to 1,588 kg (3,500 lb), allowing it to handle small boats, light cargo, or a four-wheel trailer.
The vehicle’s off-road performance is further enhanced by an adaptive suspension system. This system consists of electronically controlled dampers that actively adjust damping characteristics (stiffness/softness) in real time based on data from sensors monitoring acceleration, wheel movement, road conditions, and more. The dampers respond continuously—softening on smooth sections for comfort and stiffening over uneven terrain to better control body movement and minimize shock transfer into the cabin. The adaptive dampers continuously modulate damping force, providing increased comfort on high-quality surfaces, while improving body control and vehicle stability during rough terrain, cornering, and off-road driving. Engine and differencial are protected by skid plates when driving off-road.
The Wilderness model also features an Enhanced X-MODE (Dual-Function) off-road system, offering finer control of individual vehicle systems and improved responsiveness in extreme conditions. In addition, it provides two specialized driving modes:
1. Snow / Dirt – optimized for snow, icy surfaces, wet grass, gravel, and light off-road conditions
2. Deep Snow / Mud – designed for deep snow, slushy tracks, mud, and extremely slippery or soft surfaces
Both X-MODEs extent simulates a traditional 4×4 system with a locking differential. When activated, throttle response and engine behavior are optimized, providing softer and smoother acceleration to minimize wheel slip. The transmission holds ratios that allow higher torque delivery at lower speeds. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) receives increased priority, distributing torque between the front and rear axles to maximize traction. Electronic stability and traction systems react more sensitively, instantly braking slipping wheels—functioning similarly to a limited-slip differential. When descending a steep slope, X-MODE automatically engages Hill Descent Control for controlled downhill driving.
The interior of the Outback Wilderness is significantly modernized with a focus on comfort and practicality. The dashboard and cockpit have been redesigned, now featuring a new horizontal 12.1″ high-resolution infotainment LCD display, replacing the previous layout. In addition, a 12.3″ fully digital instrument cluster offers customizable layouts tailored to driver preferences. The infotainment system supports extensive wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Both USB-A and USB-C ports are available for charging and device integration.
The Wilderness version offers an interior made of highly durable synthetic StarTex material, designed specifically for outdoor and off-road use. Driver seat is power adjustable in 10 directions. The sporty leather multifunction steering wheel fits comfortably in hand and includes heating for cold-weather driving. Keyless entry and push-button start come standard, and the tailgate is power-operated. The Limited XT trim is also equipped with a power sunroof. Audio performance is handled by a premium Harman/Kardon system with 12 Green Edge speakers, Clari-Fi technology, and a total output of 576W.
The Outback Wilderness comes equipped with Subaru’s advanced EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, pre-collision braking, and an array of additional safety and driver-assistance features. The newly available Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection can automatically steer the vehicle toward the shoulder, bring it to a stop, and activate hazard lights in situations where the driver becomes incapacitated. Rearview camera with dynamic guide lines. The power-operated, heated and auto-dimming side mirrors. The windshield wipers include a rain sensor.
The appearance of the Outback Wilderness differs significantly from other versions. The front bumper, grille, and door claddings are more heavily dimensioned and finished in hardened matte plastic, giving the vehicle a distinctly off-road-focused look. The new, more pronounced shapes and updated design further enhance the car robust and rugged character within the compact SUV segment. The vehicle is equipped with black 17-inch heavy-duty alloy wheels, fitted with Bridgestone Dueler A/T all-terrain tires in size 225/65 R17. The Outback retains its iconic massive roof rails, dual-tip exhaust and now offers LED headlights with steering-responsive cornering for improved nighttime visibility.
