Car introduction
The new Toyota GR Corolla AWD is powered by a bespoke turbocharged three-cylinder engine G16E-GTS with a displacement of 1.6L, ranking among the most powerful production three-cylinder engines on the market. The unit utilizes a combination of direct and port injection (D-4S) and delivers 300 HP and torque of around 400 Nm in the range of 3,250–4,600 rpm. The engine is paired as standard with a 6-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) with Rev-matching. The dynamic performance of this compact vehicle is outstanding – 0–100 km/h acceleration in approximately 5.2 seconds and a top speed of around 230 km/h. From an engineering perspective, this is a motorsport-inspired (WRC) power unit with an exceptional specific output exceeding 180 HP per liter. The model features a uniquely optimized exhaust system with a triple-tailpipe layout to reduce back pressure.
The GR Corolla chassis, designated GR-Sport, has been extensively reworked for high-load performance. The front axle employs MacPherson struts, while the rear features a double wishbone suspension, enabling more precise wheel control under high lateral loads. Dampers and springs are specifically tuned for this model with a focus on traction and stability. The GR model utilizes sport Torsen limited-slip differentials on both the front and rear axles. A key component is the electronically controlled GR-FOUR AWD system, which actively distributes torque between the axles. The driver can select three modes: 60:40 (front/rear) for everyday driving, 50:50 for maximum traction and track stability, and 30:70 for a more pronounced sporty driving character. This system is unique within the hot hatch segment. Braking performance is ensured by high-performance brakes with ventilated and slotted discs, featuring red-painted four-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers at the rear. The system effectively dissipates heat and delivers maximum braking efficiency.
In addition to AWD settings, the GR model offers standard driving modes:
- Eco – reduced throttle response and system optimization for maximum efficiency.
- Normal – balanced setup for daily driving with natural response and comfort.
- Sport – sharper engine and steering response for maximum dynamics and immediacy.
- Custom – individual configuration of throttle response, steering feedback, and AWD torque distribution according to driver preference.
The interior of the Toyota GR Corolla is designed with a focus on functionality and ergonomics. It features sport seats with pronounced bolstering upholstered in BRIN-NAUB, a high-quality durable synthetic suede. The seats provide firm support during dynamic driving while allowing adjustment including seat height and fore-aft positioning. The leather multifunction steering wheel is complemented by a clear 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster optimized for rapid data readability. Both the seats and steering wheel are heated. The sporty character is further enhanced by aluminum pedals and a traditional manual handbrake. In terms of comfort, the vehicle offers dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless start, and full power operation of windows and mirrors. The infotainment system consists of a central Toyota Smart Connect touchscreen with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, and basic online services, all designed for fast response and intuitive operation without unnecessary distractions.
The exterior of the Toyota GR is fully focused on aerodynamics, featuring a widened body and flared fenders. The design incorporates prominent functional vents in the hood and fenders for improved cooling and stability. The rear end is defined by a distinctive rear spoiler and sculpted diffuser, increasing downforce at higher speeds. The sporty stance is completed by 18″ lightweight alloy wheels fitted with high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires for maximum grip.
