Car introduction

The new Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium i-FORCE MAX combines a traditional body-on-frame off-road SUV with a modern hybrid powertrain. The sixth generation of this model offers robust engineering, distinctive design and high off-road capability. Power is provided by the turbocharged 2.4 i-FORCE MAX Turbo Hybrid Powertrain four-cylinder gasoline engine. System output reaches 326 HP (243 kW) and maximum torque is 630 Nm. The combustion engine uses a turbocharger and a combination of direct and port fuel injection. The hybrid system consists of an electric motor producing 48 hp and 250 Nm of torque, powered by a 288V Ni-MH battery. The result is exceptional low-rpm pulling power, which is a significant advantage for off-road driving and trailer towing. The battery is charged automatically only while driving, primarily through regenerative energy recovery during deceleration and braking. Energy can also be supplied by the gasoline engine. The vehicle is not connected to an external charger. Under certain conditions, the electric motor can briefly power the vehicle on its own, for example when slowly crawling. However, this is not a full electric driving mode intended for longer journeys. The electric motor supports the gasoline engine during take-off and acceleration, increases torque and helps improve powertrain efficiency.

The Part-time 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) system and chassis are designed for demanding conditions away from paved roads. The selectable four-wheel-drive system offers 4H and 4L modes with a low-range transfer case for slow-speed driving in difficult terrain. Traction is supported by an electronically controlled rear differential lock and the A-TRAC system, which helps limit wheel spin. The suspension, featuring independent front suspension and a multi-link rear axle, is complemented by Bilstein dampers, which allow improved heat dissipation and consistent damping performance during prolonged off-road use. Reinforced protection of the underbody, fuel tank and transfer case is standard. The 4Runner offers systems for controlled ascent and descent of steep slopes. The braking system consists of ventilated discs on both the front and rear axles and an electronically controlled braking system with regenerative braking integrated into the hybrid powertrain. The 4Runner i-FORCE MAX combines a conventional 8-speed automatic transmission with a hybrid electric motor and a mechanical low-range transfer case for genuine off-road capability.

The vehicle offers conventional road driving modes through Drive Mode Select (DMS) and off-road modes through Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), allowing the vehicle’s behavior to be adapted to current conditions:

• Eco – optimizes accelerator response and powertrain operation with the aim of reducing fuel consumption.
• Normal – provides balanced engine and hybrid system response for everyday driving.
• Sport – sharper powertrain response, transmission shifting at higher engine speeds and a more dynamic driving character.

Multi-Terrain Select

• Dirt – optimizes traction on unpaved and uneven roads (4H).
• Mud – adjusts wheel-slip control for improved capability in mud and on slippery surfaces (4H/4L).
• Sand – adapts torque delivery for smooth driving on sand and other loose surfaces (4H/4L).
• Rock – supports controlled movement over rocky and uneven terrain (4L).

In addition to the driving modes, the vehicle features other special modes/assist systems: CRAWL Control – maintains a low speed in demanding terrain and helps the driver negotiate challenging obstacles. Downhill Assist Control – helps control vehicle speed when descending steep slopes. TOW/HAUL – optimizes powertrain behavior when towing a trailer.

The Premium interior combines durable materials with comfort features for everyday travel. The SofTex-upholstered front seats offer power adjustment, heating and ventilation. The driver will appreciate seat memory settings and a heated power-adjustable steering wheel. The practical cabin layout is complemented by a power moonroof and power-operated rear liftgate. Infotainment and connectivity are provided by a 14″ touchscreen Toyota Audio Multimedia system and a 12.3″ digital instrument cluster. The premium JBL audio system with 14 speakers and a subwoofer provides high-quality sound. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and wireless phone charging are standard.

The vehicle features the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety systems, which includes, for example: Pre-Collision System – front collision prevention with automatic emergency braking, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control – adaptive cruise control with distance regulation, Lane Tracing Assist – assistance with keeping the vehicle centered in its lane, Blind Spot Monitor – blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert – rear cross-traffic warning when reversing, Lane Departure Alert – warning when the vehicle unintentionally leaves its lane, Road Sign Assist – traffic sign recognition, Automatic High Beams – automatic high-beam switching, Proactive Driving Assist – gentle braking and steering support based on traffic conditions, Trailer Sway Control – reduction of trailer sway and Multi-Terrain Monitor – camera-based visualization of the vehicle’s surroundings for safer traversal of demanding terrain and more.

The exterior and equipment emphasize the off-road character of the TRD Off-Road model. The distinctive design is complemented by 18″ aluminum wheels, optional 18“ Nitto Ridge Grappler All-Terrain off-road tires, LED lighting, roof rails and protective body elements.
